Summer: VP Internal (Matt d'Entremont)
Vice-President Internal's transition report, Summer 2009
The CS Society Constitution lists that the Vice-President Internal's responsibilities
are to:
• act as a liaison between the Faculty and Society membership;
• sit on the Dean’s Executive, the Faculty Council, and at least one other Faculty
of Computer Science committee as the student representative for Computer
Science;
• organize student representation at all other Faculty of Computer Science
committees;
• deal with all internal issues faced by the society including courses, faculty and
curriculum;
• chair and prepare an agenda for meetings of Council in the president’s absence;
and
• to delegate his or her duties where appropriate or necessary.
Throughout the summer term, I attended all of the committee meetings. Yet since
it was the summer term, the meetings were less frequent than usual and they
were mostly focused upon preparation for upcoming events (for the fall and winter
terms). There were no meetings held for the Undergraduate Committee, and the
Graduate Committee had one meeting which was a “Meet and Greet”. I would like
to point out that John Doucette was in communication with Dr. Malcolm Heywood
in respect to the Graduate Orientation throughout the summer in my place. There
has been a graduate representative elected for the fall term, and John has been
re-elected, so I'm sure all the information will be passed on to him. I attended the
Outreach Committee meetings as well, and will continue attending these
meetings during the fall term (although I may appoint the undergraduate and
graduate representatives to attend the Undergraduate and Graduate Committee
meetings in the Fall term).
I also attended the Faculty Council and Dean's Executive meetings. I was not able
to attend the first, and last Dean's Executive meetings of the summer due to a
misunderstanding on my part, although I spoke to Dr. Shepherd and he filled me
in on what I had missed.
All of the important notes from these meetings can be found in the VPI notebook
which I started, and will continue using during the Fall term.
Dr. Peter Bodorik asked me at the beginning of term to get feedback for cluster
usage (reserving clusters for CS students only) from students. I had a few
responses, although one was an idea for the atrium, which is not possible, and I
reported the rest to him. I also send an email which reminded students that we
are able to obtain a card which gives us access to the building 24/7. I discussed
the deposit of these cards (used to be 50$) and he is going to try to lower the cost
to 20$ (refundable upon return of the card).
I was also responsible for finding a student to attend four meetings with the
Faculty, and give feedback on some of their ideas.
On a side note I also operated the BBQ at one of our “GeekBeer” events which
was fun, and I would like to suggest that it be repeated, as it was very successful.
This is sure to be noted in Nicole Lewis' report :).
